Campbell River, often heralded as the “Salmon Capital of the World,” serves as the northern gateway to this extraordinary whale watching corridor. Here, the confluence of deep, nutrient-rich waters creates an ideal environment for diverse marine life, including the awe-inspiring whales that feed in the nearby waters.
Marine mammals often seen around Central Vancouver Island include:
- Humpback Whales: The acrobats of the deep, showcasing their might and grace.
- Biggs (Transient) Orcas: Unpredictable yet thrilling, these orcas remind us of the ocean’s wild unpredictability.
- Northern Resident Orcas: These family groups showcase the complex social structures and cultures of orcas. While not seen as frequently as they are from Vancouver Island North, the northern residents are most likely to be seen from mid-July to mid-September.
- Dall’s Porpoises: Speedy and spirited, darting through the water with incredible agility.
- Pacific White-Sided Dolphins: Social and acrobatic, often gracing observers with their playful antics.
- Harbour Seals and Steller Sea Lions: The loungers and growlers, adding character to the rocky shores.
